PROJECT DESCRIPTION
THE SITE IS LOCATED IN THE LISBON WINE REGION OF PORTUGAL WHICH HAS BEEN KNOWN FOR ITS IDYLLIC WINE-MAKING CONDITIONS SINCE THE 17TH CENTURY.
AND SINCE THE FIRST HARVEST IN 1997, QUINTA DO MONTE d’OIRO WINES HAVE BEEN CONSISTENTLY AWARDED WITH COUNTLESS PRIZES AND ACHIEVEMENTS IN PORTUGAL AND ALSO AROUND THE GLOBE.
THE BRIEF OF THIS WINE TASTING ROOM PROJECT IS TO PROVIDE A ROOM THAT WILL FUNCTION AS A SPACE FOR GUESTS TO MEET AND SAMPLE WINES FROM THE VINEYARD WHILE AT THE SAME TIME SAMPLING THE STUNNING NATURAL VIEWS OF THE VINEYARD AND IT’S SURROUNDINGS. THE SPACE SHOULD BE OPEN AND INVITING WITH A TABLE THAT VISITORS CAN GATHER AROUND. THE TASTING ROOM WILL NEED TO BE OPERATIONAL THROUGHOUT THE YEAR DURING ALL SEASONS. THE ROOM SHOULD ALSO BE ABLE TO ACCOMMODATE 30 PEOPLE.
THERE ARE EXISTING BUILDINGS AROUND THE VICINITY OF THE SITE, SUCH AS THE WINERY, BARREL ROOM, A CHAPEL AND A CONFERENCE ROOM WITH MOST OF THESE BUILDINGS IN THE TRADITIONAL PORTUGUESE COLONIAL ARCHITECTURE VERNACULAR.
THE SITE IS LOCATED AT THE CORNER OF THE WINERY AND OVERLOOKING THE ROLLING HILLS OF THE VINEYARD.
FROM THESE INSPIRING VIEWPOINTS, WE ADOPT A CIRCULAR AXIS POINT TO CAPTURE AND FRAME THESE VIEWS FROM INSIDE THE BUILDING TO ALLOW GUESTS TO ENJOY THESE UNOBSTRUCTED VIEWS WHILE SAMPLING THE WINE AND LEARNING THE CIRCLE OF THE WINE MAKING CYCLE, STARTING FROM HARVESTING THE FRUITS FROM THE VINEYARD.
THE ORGANIC SHAPE AND FORM OF THE BUILDING IS ADOPTED FROM THE FLOWING OF THE AVAILABLE ACCESS POINTS FROM THE NORTHERN AND EASTERN SIDES OF THE SITE AND ALSO IN CONTRAST TO THE SURROUNDING BUILDINGS.
THE DESIGN CONCEPT FOR THE PROJECT IS THEN TO TAKE THE GUESTS AND VISITORS FOR A MYSTERIOUS JOURNEY BEFORE THEY ARRIVE AT THE INTERNAL COURTYARD, WHICH FROM THIS VIEWPOINT GUESTS CAN SAMPLE THE PEACEFUL AND UNOBSTRUCTED VIEWS OF THE ROLLING HILLS OF THE VINEYARD PRIOR UTILISING THEIR FIFTH SENSE WHEN THE BOTTLES ARE OPENED.
THE BUILDING MATERIALS SUCH AS THE STONE CLADDING FOR THE EXTERNAL WALLS AND THE EXTERIOR FLOOR FINISHES ARE SOURCED FROM THE LOCAL LIMESTONE SUPPLIER TO REDUCE THE CARBON FOOTPRINT AND LIVE A SUSTAINABLE LIFESTYLE TO CONSERVE THE ENVIRONMENT. RECYCLING THE RAINWATER THAT IS HARVESTED FROM THE ROOF ABOVE IS TO BE USED FOR HELPING THE IRRIGATION OF THE LANDSCAPE AROUND THE BUILDING SITE.
